3 Reasons You May Not Want To Use Insurance For Counselling

  1. Privacy Concerns: Insurance companies may require information about treatment, the modality being used and overall treatment. This would require sharing potentially private information about you. And how about your employer? Are you sure your employer or HR will not be notified of your participation in therapy since you are using employer benefits?

  2. Limited Coverage: Most policies will have limitations on how much they cover per session, total amount per year and even what modalities are permitted. Once you use up your covered amount you will then need to stop therapy, wait until the new fiscal year kicks in or start over with someone perhaps cheaper, like an intern or student. Most policies seem to cover between $300 and $1000 per year. This isn’t much for therapy!

  3. Treatment Success: Couples who have some skin in the game, such as paying for part or all of the session fees, tend to take therapy a little more serious. Nobody wants to waste money, so being fully engaged in the process knowing you are paying for it usually leads to greater success and commitment to the entire therapy process.
