Marriage, Couples and Relationship Counselling - Online.

We have been doing it for years.

What is online counselling?

Marriage, couples, relationship and individual counselling can all be done online using your phone or computer’s webcam and microphone. Although we have been offering online therapy for several years, it has become a lot more common since the pandemic.

Not only can couples from Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and surrounding areas can schedule an online session, there are no physical restrictions. Anyone across Ontario can access our online video sessions!

How should I prepare?

There is some prep work that needs to be done at your end in order to achieve as much as possible from our sessions.

  • disconnect as many electronics that are using up your internet signal while in session. Less use of your wifi, better the connection will be

  • restart/reboot your computer or smartphone before connecting

  • test your internet here

  • put the dog away if you can. They love to bark when they know you are on camera! Excessive barking will be a distraction for you, and me.

  • do your best to keep the kids away. This will be tough, especially if the kids are not in school. To ensure your own privacy try to make some arrangement to have the kids safely occupied somewhere else as to not disturb you. But your role as a mom or dad comes first!

  • try to have your area bright, with light in front of you, not behind you. If there is a lamp behind you, it will cause my video of you to be dark. Light up your face, not the back of your head. Position the camera so that I can see as much of you as possible, not a close up of your face.

  • Be comfortable, with boundaries :) Many clients will use their kitchen table or the couch. Go wherever you are comfortable. I understand that with the kids being at home, your safe spot may be your bedroom. No problem. Just be mindful and appropriate. Be fully dressed.

  • don’t worry if your house is a mess. I really….really… don’t care. I just care about you. I don’t care what is in the background.

  • turn off your cell phone and close other programs such as Facebook to avoid unnecessary distraction.

Clients like e-therapy.

For most of our clients this is the first time they have had to do counselling through a video camera. They are surprised just how easy and convenient it actually is. And they are enjoying it and finding it very helpful.

FAQs

What are we using for our online session?

We use secure and compliant video platforms such as Whereby, Zoom and Psychology Today.

Can I use my cell phone or tablet?

You sure can! In fact, my clients are using their cell phones. If you can get to a computer, that would be better. Large screen, typically better connection. But phones are fine too!

We both want to have a session with you. Do we have to use the same computer?

No you don’t. You can log in on one device and they can log in on another device.

My partner will not be home when I log in. Can they log in while at work or do we have to be physically together?

You do not have to be physically together. One can be at work while the other one is at home.
